#1 Byrnes Knocks of Two-Time Florida Champ

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

Byrnes (Duncan, SC) showed a nationally television audience on ESPNU why USA Today has it ranked #1 in the nation Friday night as the Rebels dismantled two-time defending Florida Class 2B champ Pahokee 38-12.

Not to make excuses, but Pahokee, which saw its 32-game win streak snapped, was playing with a heavy heart over last week's shooting death of linebacker Norman Griffith. Griffith's family traveled to South Carolina for the game to support the team that dedicated game in Norman's memory.

Top Ranked Byrnes Faces Florida Champ

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

Not that the Pahokee (FL) Blue Devils needed extra motivation heading into it's game against Byrnes (Duncan, SC), the #1 team in the USA Today Super 25, but they definitely have it.

Pahokee, which has won four of the last five Florida Class 2B state titles, are dedicating tonight's nationally televised game on ESPNU to Norman Griffith, who was killed last weekend in a shooting after a dance.

#1 Byrnes Survives First Half Scare From North Gwinnett (GA)

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

At halftime of the Progressive Football Challenge, it looked like North Gwinnett was going to prove that the Byrnes Rebels were not worthy of the #1 ranking that bestowed upon the team by USA Today. However, like all good teams with proven leadership, the Rebels put up four second half touchdowns that brought the team back from a 14-9 halftime deficit to defeat last year's Georgia Class AAAAA runner-up 36-21.

Greer High Placed on Probation

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

The 2008 high school football season for Greer High School in Greenville, South Carolina may be over before it starts.

The school's football program has been placed on probation by the South Carolina High School League for participating in an illegal practice. That means that the team's players are ineligible to play this season, but they are able to practice until appeals are made. An appeal will be made by the school on Monday.

Head coach Will Smith and his team are scheduled to open the season August 29th at home against Woodruff.
